Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, was born within Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art through her aunt Denise as a young child. She worked as a night nurse in order to give her aunt time that she needed during the day to indulge in theatre, literature, and art. DuVernay enjoyed the film West Side Story, which she was able to introduce her. DuVernay discovered through her example the power of art as an avenue for action. DuVernay grew up with her mother who was knowledgeable about society and taught her how to use the arts to find a way of expressing herself. DuVernay was born together with her parents in Compton was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. Her father recalled watching the Civil Rights movement's historic march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in close proximity to Selma Alabama. The summers she spent in Selma, Alabama was the inspiration she used to create a documentary about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. She enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay began producing in broadcast journalism when she was still at college. Her internship was with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to watch the home of one of the jurors of the jury. She was also asked to go through their garbage. She was disappointed by her journalistic duties and decided to change to the field of public relations. DuVernay was hired right from college to be an intern at a small studio. In this role, she launched her own public relations company that was named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. The agency has launched a wide range of promotion and lifestyle networks such as Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
